Teaching ESL through the Pandemic:
Reflections and New Realities
The TEAL NL 2022 conference, themed “Teaching ESL through the Pandemic: Reflections and New Realities,” occurred on November 4-5, 2022. It was a hybrid event, with in-person activities at the Association of New Canadians’ LINC School in St. John’s and virtual sessions for remote participants. Keynote speakers Dr. Jim Cummins and Donald Moen, experts in language acquisition and ESL instruction, led discussions on the challenges and innovations in ESL education resulting from the pandemic. The conference program included a diverse range of sessions and workshops, covering topics such as teaching strategies for newcomers, intercultural competence, online learning environments, and the use of technology in language instruction. The event fostered a valuable platform for ESL educators, researchers, and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, experiences, and insights on navigating the evolving landscape of ESL education in the post-pandemic era.
